Lykkers, have you ever looked at a field of sunflowers and wondered why so many young flower heads seem to face the same direction? Their bright faces appear to follow daylight from morning to evening, almost as if they are quietly watching the sky.
We often describe this as a flower “following the sun,” but there is a fascinating biological process behind it. Today, we are going to look at how this movement happens and why it changes as the plant grows.

Not Every Sunflower Turns
We may imagine that every sunflower spends the whole day turning from east to west, but that is not quite what happens. The movement is mainly seen in young, developing plants. Before the flower head becomes fully mature, the upper part of the stem is still growing and can bend gradually toward changing light.
As the plant develops, the stem becomes firmer and the flower head becomes heavier. Once the flower reaches maturity, it generally settles in one direction instead of continuing its daily movement. In many cases, mature flower heads tend to face toward the morning light, which also gives us a better idea of why young and mature plants look so different.
The Role Of Light
So, how does a young sunflower move without having muscles or a moving joint? The answer begins with light and plant growth hormones, especially auxin. Auxin helps control cell growth and is closely involved in the bending process.
When light comes mainly from one side, auxin becomes distributed unevenly across the growing part of the stem. Cells on the less illuminated side can grow longer than cells on the brighter side. This difference in growth makes the stem curve, causing the flower head to change its position.
Why Does The Stem Bend?
We can picture the process as a simple difference in growth. Imagine a young stem standing upright. Light reaches one side more strongly, while the other side receives less direct light. Auxin becomes concentrated more toward the shaded side, encouraging those cells to lengthen.
As one side grows slightly faster, the stem bends toward the light. The movement is gradual rather than sudden. Over several hours, the repeated changes in cell growth can make the flower head appear to travel across the sky with the sun.
What Happens At Night?
When daylight fades, the plant does not simply freeze in the exact position where we last saw it. Its internal growth pattern continues to adjust. During the night, the stem can slowly change its position so that the young flower is ready for the next morning.
This is why the movement should not be imagined as a fast rotation. We cannot watch a sunflower spin like a machine. Instead, tiny changes in growth accumulate over time, producing a visible change in direction when we compare morning and evening.
Why Does Movement Stop?
As the sunflower matures, the growing part of the stem becomes less flexible. The flower head also becomes larger and heavier, while the pattern of stem growth changes. Because the plant is no longer growing in the same way as before, its ability to track changing light becomes much weaker.
This gives us a simple way to understand the difference: a young sunflower is still actively developing, while a mature one has reached a more stable stage. Its daily movement is therefore much less noticeable.
A Simple Nature Lesson
We often think of movement as something that requires muscles, but plants show us another possibility. A sunflower can change its position through light-sensitive growth, unequal cell expansion, and carefully controlled internal signals. There is no need for a rapid mechanical turn. Small biological changes are enough to create a remarkable result.
When we look closely, the famous sunflower movement is not just a pretty scene. It is also an example of how plants respond to their surroundings while they grow.

Look Again Tomorrow
So, Lykkers, the next time we see a young sunflower facing the daylight, we can look at it a little differently. It is not simply “chasing” the sun. Its changing position comes from growth patterns inside the stem, with light and auxin working together to guide that development.
