Travel and Fun
Dhigurah, a long, narrow island in the Maldives’ South Ari Atoll, offers a relaxed alternative to the country’s private resort destinations.
The surrounding ocean adds another reason to visit, with opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and guided marine-life excursions. For travelers seeking beautiful scenery without the cost of a luxury island resort, Dhigurah deserves a closer look.

Enjoy the Island’s Long Beach
One of Dhigurah’s main attractions is its extensive shoreline, where pale sand meets clear blue water. The beach stretches along much of the island’s western side, providing space for quiet walks, sunset views, and relaxing beside the lagoon. At the southern end, the island narrows into a sandy spit surrounded by shallow water. Walking there is a popular outing, and the journey through palm trees and coastal vegetation is part of the experience.
Beach access is generally free. Visitors should follow local signs about where swimwear is appropriate and wear suitable clothing when walking through the village. Bring water and sun protection, as shade can be limited near the sandbank.

Explore the Underwater World
Dhigurah is especially well known for excursions into the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are regularly encountered. Local operators organize guided trips to search for these large marine animals, alongside snorkeling outings to reefs and other areas with rich marine life.
A whale shark excursion typically costs around €60–€95 per person, while a general snorkeling trip may be approximately €35–€55. Prices vary with the operator, trip length, and what is included. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, so choose a responsible guide and follow instructions to keep a respectful distance from marine life.
Walk or Cycle Around Dhigurah
Dhigurah is around four kilometers long, making walking a convenient way to explore. The village occupies the northern part of the island, while quieter stretches of vegetation and beach extend toward the southern tip. Take time to wander past local guesthouses, small cafés, and the harbor to get a sense of everyday island life.
Bicycle rental generally costs around €5–€9 per day. Walking around the island and visiting the beach do not require an admission ticket, so these activities help keep travel expenses manageable.
Choose a Comfortable Guesthouse
Accommodation on Dhigurah ranges from simple guesthouses to stylish boutique properties with sea views. Many places can help arrange transfers, snorkeling tours, and other activities, making it easier to organize a stay without booking every detail separately.
A standard double room often starts at approximately €50–€110 per night, with beachfront properties and higher-category rooms costing more. Check whether breakfast, taxes, and transfers are included when comparing rates. A low advertised room price may not represent the final amount paid.
How to Reach the Island
Most international visitors arrive at Velana International Airport near Malé before continuing to Dhigurah by shared speedboat. The journey usually takes around two hours, depending on the service and sea conditions. A shared speedboat costs approximately €50–€65 per person each way. A domestic flight to nearby Maamigili followed by a boat transfer is another option, though the total cost is generally higher.

Dhigurah combines a beautiful beach, a welcoming local-island atmosphere, and access to memorable ocean excursions. With free beach access, walkable surroundings, and a range of guesthouses, the island can suit different budgets.
