Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula is famous for its turquoise waters, spectacular beaches and ancient ruins. Yet beyond the busy resorts of Cancún lies another side of the region, where Indigenous Maya communities are introducing visitors to traditional crafts, forest trails and remarkable natural landscapes.
A growing movement known as regenerative tourism is changing how travellers experience the peninsula. Its goal is to support local livelihoods, protect natural resources and preserve cultural traditions while offering meaningful adventures.

Why Tourism Is Changing In Mexico
For decades, Cancún's tourism industry has centred on large coastal resorts. Although this development created employment, it also increased pressure on freshwater supplies, ecosystems and nearby communities.
In March 2026, Mexican authorities announced new support for community-led tourism projects.
The initiative includes improving walking routes, water infrastructure and visitor facilities while giving local residents greater involvement in tourism development.
Two particularly interesting destinations are Camino del Mayab and Maya Ka'an, both accessible from the wider Cancún region.
Discover The Ancient Maya Trail
Camino del Mayab is a 110-kilometre walking route south of Mérida, connecting 14 Maya communities.
Opened in 2020, the trail passes through tropical forest, traditional villages and former agricultural estates.
Visitors can explore historic pathways, learn about local customs and enjoy homemade regional dishes prepared by community families.
Several sections also provide opportunities to swim in cenotes, natural freshwater pools formed in limestone.
The terrain is generally flat, although tropical heat makes longer walks demanding.

Explore A Protected Natural Paradise
Maya Ka'an offers another remarkable experience near Tulum.
The destination encompasses the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-listed landscape of forests, lagoons, mangroves and coastal ecosystems.
Local Maya cooperatives organise kayaking, birdwatching and guided boat excursions.
One particularly memorable activity involves floating along an ancient canal surrounded by mangroves.
Visitors can also discover traditional cooking, handicrafts and the region's rich ecological heritage.
How Much Do Excursions Cost?
A guided day trip along Camino del Mayab, combining historic estates and cenote swimming, starts at approximately €105 per person for bookings of at least two people.
A complete five-day guided hiking adventure costs around €700 per person.
At Sian Ka'an, guided kayaking experiences cost approximately €90, while an early full-day Ancient Canal excursion costs around €140 per adults.
A shorter lagoon experience costs approximately €95.
An additional conservation entrance charge of around €11 may apply.
Prices vary according to transport, group size and included activities, so check the arrangements before booking.
When Is The Best Time To Visit?
November to March generally offers more comfortable temperatures for walking and outdoor activities.
April and May can be extremely hot, while the rainy season brings greater humidity and occasional disruptions.
Mérida is a convenient starting point for Camino del Mayab, while Tulum provides easier access to Maya Ka'an.
A rental car or organised transfer is useful because rural public transport connections can be limited.
How To Travel Responsibly
Choosing community-operated excursions helps ensure that more tourism income reaches local residents.
Camino del Mayab reports that approximately 80% of its tour revenue goes directly to participating communities.
Visitors should respect local customs, avoid leaving rubbish and follow guides' instructions around protected waterways.
Bringing reusable water bottles, appropriate clothing and some cash can also make rural excursions easier.

For travellers seeking something beyond traditional sightseeing, the Yucatán Peninsula offers a chance to experience remarkable landscapes while supporting the communities that care for them.
