Autumn can be Europe’s secret second season. Summer crowds thin out, parks turn gold, temperatures become far kinder to walkers, and cities that felt hectic in July suddenly have room to breathe.

Kayak analysed flight and hotel searches made in August 2026 for trips between 15 September and 15 November. The results highlight 10 cities where a spontaneous autumn escape can still offer good value — especially if you choose the right destination and travel dates.

Reykjavik: Northern Lights Season

Reykjavik becomes dramatically atmospheric as the nights lengthen. Autumn brings the return of northern-lights season, while waterfalls, black-sand beaches and geothermal pools remain accessible without peak-summer crowds.

Kayak’s data puts average airfare at about €572, with hotels around €231 per night. Walking the waterfront and colourful central streets costs nothing, making Iceland’s capital easier to enjoy on a controlled budget than its reputation suggests.

Copenhagen: Autumn With Hygge

Copenhagen suits cooler weather almost perfectly. Cycle through parks filled with copper-coloured leaves, explore compact neighbourhoods on foot or visit Tivoli Gardens when thousands of pumpkins transform it for the autumn season.

Average airfare is approximately €708, while hotels cost around €211 per night.

Madrid: Sunshine Without The Heat

Madrid becomes much easier to explore once summer temperatures fade. Retiro Park and Campo del Moro turn golden, while museums, markets and elegant boulevards provide plenty to fill a long weekend.

Average flights come to roughly €744, with hotels at about €210 per night. Picnic supplies from local markets can also keep food costs down while letting you enjoy the city’s parks.

Autumn gives Dublin a moodier, more cinematic character. St Stephen’s Green change colour, Georgian streets feel quieter, and theatres provide an easy escape when the weather turns cool.

Average airfare is around €735, while accommodation averages approximately €220 per night.

Zurich: Switzerland For Less

Zurich is rarely described as inexpensive, but autumn can soften the cost. Lake Zurich becomes framed by orange and red foliage, while Uetliberg offers panoramic views over the city and surrounding landscape.

Kayak recorded average airfare of approximately €815 and hotel prices of around €173 per night — noticeably lower accommodation costs than several supposedly cheaper capitals on the list.

Prague: Storybook Autumn Streets

Few cities wear autumn as well as Prague. Red leaves frame Gothic towers, Petřín Hill becomes a natural viewing platform, and cooler weather makes long walks through the historic centre far more comfortable.

Hotels average only €145 per night, among the lowest prices in the ranking, while average airfare comes to around €844.

Barcelona: Beyond Summer

Barcelona after summer feels like a different city. Mild temperatures make Park Güell, Las Ramblas and the waterfront easier to explore, while autumn cultural events keep the city lively long after beach season.

Average airfare is approximately €792, and hotels cost around €238 per night.

Milan: Timing Is Everything

Milan can become expensive during Fashion Week, so visiting immediately before or after the September event can make a substantial difference.

Autumn colours fill Parco Sempione, the Duomo remains the essential landmark, and Lake Como is only about an hour away by train.

Average airfare is around €748, while hotels average €285 per night, making careful timing particularly important here.

Where Autumn Value Really Wins

The cheapest trip is not always the city with the lowest airfare. Prague and Budapest stand out for affordable hotels, Istanbul offers the lowest accommodation price, while Reykjavik combines comparatively lower airfare with spectacular seasonal scenery.

Kayak travel trends expert Yvonne Bonanati explained that travellers focused on value should consider heading east, where cities such as Prague and Budapest can keep total trip costs lower without sacrificing atmosphere or major attractions.

The best autumn bargain, then, may come from looking beyond the headline flight price. Stay a little longer in a city with cheaper hotels, travel after the summer rush, and Europe can feel both richer in atmosphere and noticeably easier on the budget.
