Good Day, Lykkers! The 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) marks a significant milestone in the history of the tournament with the introduction of a 16-team format.

The expansion creates a larger group stage, more matches, and greater opportunities for emerging national teams to gain experience against the continent's strongest sides. Previous editions featured 12 participating nations, but the Confederation of African Football (CAF) expanded the competition to allow more countries to compete on Africa's biggest women's football stage.

Group A

Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, Kenya

Hosts Morocco headline Group A after continuing their rise in African women's football in recent years. Algeria also entered the tournament with growing confidence, while Senegal aimed to build on previous continental appearances. Kenya returned to compete against some of Africa's strongest teams, making the group highly competitive from the opening match.

Group B

South Africa, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Tanzania

Group B combines established contenders with ambitious challengers. Defending champions South Africa entered as one of the favorites, supported by a squad with considerable international experience. Ivory Coast brought physicality and attacking quality, while Burkina Faso and Tanzania looked to challenge the group's traditional powers.

Group C

Nigeria, Zambia, Egypt, Malawi

Nigeria, the tournament's most successful nation, leads a challenging Group C that also includes Zambia, one of the continent's fastest-improving teams. Egypt returned hoping to make a deep run, while Malawi celebrates its first-ever appearance at a Women's Africa Cup of Nations, representing another important step in the country's football development.

Group D

Ghana, Cameroon, Mali, Cape Verde

Group D features several experienced African football nations alongside tournament newcomers. Cameroon and Ghana have long histories of competing at the highest continental level, while Mali continues to establish itself as a competitive side. Cape Verde makes its historic WAFCON debut, adding another milestone to the country's growing presence in international football.

New Faces Join Returning Nations

Of the 16 participating teams, nine also competed in the 2024 edition, providing continuity and maintaining a high level of competition across the tournament. However, the expanded format has also introduced fresh storylines. Cape Verde and Malawi are making their first appearances at WAFCON, reflecting the steady growth of women's football across Africa. At the same time, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Tunisia, all participants in the 2024 tournament, did not qualify for the 2026 finals.

Expanding the competition allows more players to experience elite international football while giving developing national teams valuable exposure against Africa's strongest opponents. The larger field also increases the number of matches for supporters to enjoy and creates additional opportunities for emerging stars to showcase their talent on a continental stage.
