Travel and Fun

Mount Hood in Oregon, USA is the highest peak in the state and one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the Pacific Northwest. Its snowy summit, forests, lakes, and glaciers attract visitors for hiking, skiing, camping, and photography.
In this guide, we focus on practical details — ticket costs, opening hours, transport fees, accommodation prices, and dining costs — so we can plan the trip with real numbers and useful facts.
Opening Hours & Best Time To Visit
• Mount Hood National Forest: Open 24 hours a day, all year round. Trails and roads are accessible unless weather or snow conditions close certain areas.
• Ski Resorts: Most ski areas operate from late November to April. Timberline Lodge Ski Area often operates year round because of its high elevation.
Best Seasons:
– July to October: Best time for hiking and lake visits. Most trails are clear from snow.
– December to February: Best for skiing and snow sports. Expect higher prices and larger crowds.
– Spring & Autumn: Fewer visitors and moderate weather. Good for budget travel and photography.
Arriving early in the morning helps us avoid crowds and parking issues.
Entry Fees & Required Passes
Mount Hood National Forest does not charge a universal entrance ticket. However, some areas require parking passes or recreation permits.
• Parking Pass (Northwest Forest Pass): Required at many popular trailheads during summer. The pass usually works for one day or one year depending on what we choose.
• Winter Parking Permit (Sno Park Permit): Required from November to April for snow play and winter parking areas. The permit is necessary if we park near ski zones or snow recreation sites.
Ski Lift Tickets:
At Timberline Lodge Ski Area:
– Day lift ticket (full day) usually around $58.
– Afternoon tickets may cost around $47.
– Children under 6 often ski free.
At other ski resorts such as Mount Hood Meadows or SkiBowl, daily lift tickets typically range from about $80 to $150 depending on demand, age, and season.
Ticket prices increase during holidays and peak weekends. Booking early can save money.
Transportation Costs & How To Get There
From Portland to Mount Hood, the distance is about 60 miles.
By Car:
Driving takes around 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Round-trip fuel cost is usually around $10 to $20 depending on vehicle type and gas price.
Highway 26 is the main route. In winter, snow tires or chains may be required. Road conditions can change quickly, so checking weather updates before driving is important.

Public Shuttle — Local Mountain Bus:
This local bus connects nearby towns like Sandy to ski areas and trailheads.
– One-way fare is usually around $2.
– All-day pass is about $5.
– Children under 6 often ride free.
This is a budget friendly option if we do not want to drive.
Private Airport Transfer:
If we travel directly from Portland International Airport, private shuttle services may cost around $100 to $150 per hour, with minimum charges applied. This option is convenient but more expensive.
Accommodation Prices
There are different lodging choices around Mount Hood. Prices vary by season and location.
Timberline Lodge:
A historic mountain hotel located near the ski area. Room prices usually range from $180 to $350 per night depending on room type and season. It is popular and often fully booked in peak season.
Government Camp Area:
Small mountain community with cabins and small lodges. Budget rooms may start around $100 to $180 per night. Cabin rentals may cost $150 to $300 per night depending on size and facilities.

Booking accommodation in advance is strongly recommended during summer vacation and winter ski season.
Dining & Food Costs
Food prices around the mountain depend on whether we eat inside resorts or bring our own meals.
- Resort Restaurants: Meals at lodge restaurants usually cost $15 to $30 per dish. Drinks and snacks add extra cost.
- Casual Restaurants Near Government Camp: A simple meal in a cafe or diner often costs $10 to $20 per person.
- Groceries & Self Catering: Buying food from supermarkets in nearby towns can reduce costs. Snacks or quick meal items usually cost around $5 to $10 per person.
Bringing water, snacks, and light meals helps save money during hiking or skiing days.
Practical Travel Tips
• Dress in layers because mountain temperatures change quickly. Even in summer, higher elevation areas can feel cold.
• Wear strong shoes with good grip for hiking trails and rocky paths.
• Carry enough water, a map, and a portable charger. Mobile signals may be weak in remote areas.
• Follow trail rules and respect wildlife. Stay on marked paths and keep distance from animals.
• In winter, check avalanche warnings before skiing or exploring backcountry areas. Safety equipment is important.
Preparation helps us avoid risks and enjoy the trip more comfortably.
