Travel and Fun

Kirkjufell stands proudly on the north coast of Iceland’s Snaefellsnes Peninsula, rising 463 m near the town of Grundarfjordur.
In summer, the weather is mild, waterfalls flow strongly, and daylight lasts long under the midnight sun. This makes it one of the most attractive natural spots for us to explore and photograph.
Known as one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains, Kirkjufell draws visitors for its unique shape and dramatic scenery. In this guide, we share clear details about costs, transport, accommodation, food, and practical tips so we can plan a smooth trip.
Ticket Fees and Visiting Information
- Entrance to Kirkjufell and the nearby waterfall area is free. There is no ticket required to walk around or enjoy the views. The site is open 24/7 all year, including summer.
- Parking near the mountain usually requires payment. The parking fee is about $7–$11 per day. Payment is made through a parking machine or mobile system. Always keep proof of payment visible in the car to avoid fines.
- There are no public restrooms directly at the viewpoint. It is better to use facilities in Grundarfjordur before arriving.
- The best visiting time is early morning or late evening when crowds are smaller and light is softer.
How We Get There & Transportation Costs
The most convenient way to reach Kirkjufell is by rental car. From Reykjavik to Kirkjufell is about 180 km and takes around 2 to 2.5 hours by car. Roads are generally well maintained.
Car Rental Cost in Summer:
- Economy car: $40–$70 per day
- Mid-size SUV: $70–$120 per day
- 4WD vehicle: $90–$150 per day
Fuel Cost:
Fuel prices in Iceland are high. Expect around $2.00–$2.30 per liter. Filling a tank usually costs $100–$150 depending on vehicle size and usage.
Public buses connect Reykjavik to western towns, but they do not directly stop at the mountain. From the nearest bus stop, additional transport may be needed. Driving remains the easiest and most flexible option for us.
Best Time to Visit in Summer
Summer months from June to August offer the best conditions. The landscape turns green, waterfalls are full, and daylight lasts almost all day.
Best Photo Times:
- Early morning: around 4:00–6:00
- Late evening: around 21:00–23:30
These hours give soft light and fewer visitors. The midnight sun sometimes creates special lighting conditions for photography.
