A Town of Firsts

Taiping is known for several important firsts in Malaysia. Among them is the Perak Museum, which was the first museum to be built in the country.

It was founded by Sir Hugh Low in 1883, while the main building was completed in 1886. The museum later expanded with additional wings and a second storey to accommodate more collections.

Taiping is also closely connected with Malaysia’s early railway history. Taiping Railway Station is recognized as the first railway station built in Malaysia.

The original station was built in the late 1800s to serve the country’s first railway line, which connected Taiping with Kuala Sepetang, formerly known as Port Weld. The original station remained in operation for more than 100 years before the new station was built in 2014.

Taiping Lake Gardens

Taiping Lake Gardens is one of the town’s most recognizable attractions.

Established as Malaysia’s first public recreation park in 1884, the gardens cover more than 60 hectares and feature lakes, mature trees, and walking paths. The site was originally an abandoned tin-mining area before being transformed into a public garden.

The gardens offer a green setting in the heart of Taiping. Visitors can walk along the paths surrounding the lakes or enjoy a swan boat ride while taking in the scenery. Some of the trees in the gardens are more than 100 years old, adding to the character of this historic public space.

Perak Museum

The Perak Museum remains an important attraction for visitors interested in the history and culture of the region.

Its collections include natural history, cultural materials, traditional crafts, and historical and anthropological artefacts. The museum also presents information about Taiping and the development of the tin-mining industry in Perak.

The museum building is notable for its Victorian and Moorish architectural elements. Its collections provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about the diverse cultural heritage and history of Perak while exploring one of Taiping’s best-known heritage institutions.

Wildlife and Nature

Taiping also offers attractions connected with wildlife and nature. Zoo Taiping and Night Safari is located close to Taiping Lake Gardens and was established in 1961 as Malaysia’s first zoo.

The zoo covers 36 acres and is home to more than 140 species of wildlife. Its exhibits use naturalistic settings designed to represent different animal habitats.

The Night Safari is another notable attraction. It was the first night safari to open in Malaysia and allows visitors to observe animals after dark. Zoo Taiping is open during the day, while the Night Safari operates separately in the evening.
