Europe in September

September is an ideal month for exploring Europe. The peak summer crowds begin to thin, temperatures become more comfortable and many destinations still enjoy long, bright days.

From English countryside walks to Mediterranean sailing and dramatic mountain drives, these six places make the most of the shoulder season.

Cotswolds, UK

September brings softer light and the first hints of autumn colour to the Cotswolds, making it a particularly pleasant time to walk between honey-coloured villages and rolling hills. Castle Combe, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water are usually easier to explore once the busiest summer weeks are over.

The 164 km Cotswold Way runs between Chipping Campden and Bath, but there is no need to tackle the entire trail. Short village-to-village sections work well for a day trip.

Travelling without a car is possible, although planning matters. The Cotswolds Discoverer pass combines participating local buses and trains and currently works out at about €17.50 for one day. The bookable Robin minibus is useful for less accessible villages and costs roughly €3.50 per journey.

For a simple itinerary, base yourself near Moreton-in-Marsh and combine Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and a countryside walk rather than trying to cover the entire region in one day.

Istria, Croatia

September is harvest season in Istria. Grapes are being collected, truffle season begins and temperatures are far more comfortable for cycling than during midsummer.

Rovinj is ideal for a relaxed coastal stay, while Pula offers one of the region’s major historical sights. Pula’s Roman amphitheatre is open from 08:00 to 21:00 during September, with entry costing €10.

Northern Istria is especially appealing this month. The 2026 White Truffle Days run from early September into November, with events around Buzet, Motovun and Livade.

Cyclists can also plan around the Parenzana event in Vižinada on 27 September. The recreational route covers around 46 km and participation costs €10, including refreshments and a meal.

A good combination is two nights in Rovinj followed by one or two nights inland near Motovun, where the atmosphere becomes much more rural.

Istria, Croatia

La Palma, Spain

La Palma is one of the Canary Islands’ strongest choices for travellers who prefer hiking to beach resorts.

The Ruta de los Volcanes crosses a dramatic landscape of volcanic ridges and pine forest. The official tourism board describes it as a demanding route of around 17.5 km, with more than 1,200 metres of elevation change, so proper footwear, plenty of water and an early start are essential.

Caldera de Taburiente National Park is another highlight. Day access is free, while overnight camping inside the park is also free but requires an advance reservation. Visitors driving to La Cumbrecita must reserve a parking place, and access before 16:00 requires advance planning.

For a less strenuous day, visit the national park in the morning and spend the afternoon in Los Llanos de Aridane rather than attempting several major trails back to back.

Bologna, Italy

September suits Bologna particularly well. Early-autumn produce begins appearing in markets, while the temperature is more comfortable for exploring the city’s kilometres of covered porticoes.

Start around Piazza Maggiore and the Quadrilatero food district, then walk towards the university quarter. For lunch, look for a traditional trattoria serving tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini or seasonal mushroom dishes rather than choosing restaurants directly on the busiest square.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca is free to enter and is generally open from 07:00 to 18:00, with slightly later closing during the warmer months. Those who do not want to walk uphill can take the San Luca Express from the city centre for €15 return.

For travellers planning several attractions, the Bologna Welcome Card costs €35, while the Plus version costs €55 and includes additional services such as the San Luca Express and sightseeing bus.

Remember to budget for the 2026 tourist tax, which ranges from €4 to €7 per person per night for most accommodation, while hostels and campsites charge €2.80.

Turquoise Coast, Türkiye

September remains an excellent month for exploring the Mediterranean coast around Fethiye. The sea is still warm, but the atmosphere becomes noticeably calmer once the July and August rush is over.

One of the easiest ways to experience the coast is a full-day 12 Islands cruise from Fethiye. Current September 2026 prices start at around €33, usually including several swimming stops and lunch.

Travellers wanting a longer experience can book a multi-day traditional sailing trip. A three-night Fethiye-to-Olympos cruise is listed at around €550 per person in September, including full-board meals, crew services and accommodation on board.

Fethiye is also a practical base for combining sailing with sections of the Lycian Way. Allow at least three days rather than treating the area as a quick beach stop.

Transylvania, Romania

September is one of the best periods for driving the Transfăgărăşan Highway through the Făgăraş Mountains.

The high mountain section is currently open, although weather and temporary restrictions can affect access. Earlier in September, short closures were introduced for specific events, which is a good reminder to check conditions on the morning of departure.

Bâlea Lake is the obvious stop. If you prefer not to drive the highest section, the cable car between Bâlea Waterfall and Bâlea Lake currently operates roughly from 09:00 to 18:00. A one-way ticket costs about €15.20 after conversion from the current local fare.

Whether you prefer hiking, cycling, food, sailing or a mountain road trip, September offers a quieter and often more comfortable version of Europe. The summer atmosphere has not completely disappeared, but there is finally more space to enjoy it.
