Can beauty really be measured? A recent study tried to answer that question with technology rather than personal opinion.

More than 60 major cities around the world were shown in summertime images, while eye-tracking technology measured how quickly people noticed each picture and how long their attention remained there.

The result was a ranking of the world’s most visually appealing summer cities. Europe performed particularly strongly, taking 19 of the top 30 places.

Banff Takes the Top Spot

The Canadian mountain town of Banff finished first with a score of 96 out of 100.

Participants spent an average of 3.2 seconds looking at its image, longer than at any other destination in the study. Rustic timber buildings surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery gave Banff a clear visual advantage.

For travellers, its appeal goes far beyond appearance. Summer is ideal for hiking, lake visits and exploring Banff National Park.

Traveller tip: July and August are extremely busy. June and early September usually offer a calmer experience while still providing good conditions for outdoor activities.

Mykonos Wins Attention Fastest

Second place went to Mykonos, Greece, with 87.3 points.

Its famous combination of whitewashed buildings and vivid blue sea captured attention faster than any other image. Participants noticed Mykonos after only 1.5 seconds.

The island is visually irresistible, but it is also one of Greece’s more expensive summer destinations.

Budget tip: Accommodation outside the most popular parts of Mykonos Town can offer better value. Local buses are also useful for reaching beaches without relying on taxis.

Sydney Brings Summer Into the City

With a score of 85.6, Sydney came third.

Its appeal lies in the unusual combination of large urban beaches, waterfront scenery and city architecture. The ranking highlighted its relaxed atmosphere and strong summer identity.

Bondi Beach may be the most famous stop, but Manly and Coogee offer excellent alternatives. The coastal walk between Bondi and Coogee is one of the best free activities in the city.

Remember that Sydney’s summer runs from December to February, so its warmest season arrives during the Northern Hemisphere winter.

Bruges Proves Beaches Are Not Essential

Fourth place went to Bruges, Belgium, with 84.1 points.

Its canals, historic townhouses and compact medieval centre created a completely different kind of visual attraction.

Summer can be crowded, especially during the middle of the day when large numbers of day visitors arrive.

Best strategy: Spend at least one night in Bruges. Early mornings and evenings are quieter, making the canals and old streets feel much more atmospheric.

Bristol Completes the Top Five

The UK’s highest-ranked city was Bristol, which scored 83.7 and finished fifth.

The city combines a historic harbour, colourful neighbourhoods, street art and green spaces. Four other UK cities also appeared in the top 30: Liverpool in 15th place, Bath in 25th, Glasgow in 27th and Brighton in 29th.

Germany also performed strongly, with Munich in 14th place, Freiburg in 16th, Hamburg in 22nd and Dresden in 23rd.

The Rest of the Top Ten

The complete top ten also includes Palma de Mallorca in sixth place, Kyoto in seventh, Kotor in eighth, Auckland in ninth and Los Angeles in tenth.

For European travellers, Palma and Kotor are especially interesting because they combine historic streets with easy access to the sea.

Kotor can also be a good option outside the busiest weeks of July and August, while Palma benefits from extensive flight connections across Europe.

What the Ranking Really Shows

Eye-tracking cannot determine which city someone will personally love most. It measures attention, not emotional attachment.

Still, the results reveal an interesting pattern. Strong contrasts, water, dramatic landscapes and distinctive architecture repeatedly appear among the highest-ranked destinations.

Banff may have won the experiment, but the wider lesson is that visual appeal comes in many forms: mountains in Canada, whitewashed streets in Greece, canals in Belgium or beaches in Australia. The best destination depends not only on what catches the eye, but on what kind of summer experience you actually want.
