A destination 30 nautical miles away may sound like an easy summer escape. But at 20 knots, getting there and back already consumes three hours before slower harbor sections, anchoring, or any change in sea conditions enters the calculation.
That leads to a more useful way to design a day on a motor yacht: instead of asking how far the boat can travel, work out how large your boat-day radius really is.

Give the Day a Travel Budget
Start with hours rather than destinations. An eight-hour outing does not necessarily contain eight useful cruising hours if the point is also to swim, stop for lunch, relax at anchor, or spend time near the coast.
Decide what deserves the largest share
Suppose you want three hours at a destination and another hour available for anchoring, maneuvering, slower harbor travel, and schedule margin. An eight-hour day then leaves about four hours for the main outward and return runs.
With two hours available in each direction, the theoretical radius changes dramatically with cruising speed:
15 knots = 30 nautical miles
20 knots = 40 nautical miles
25 knots = 50 nautical miles
Those are mathematical ceilings, not destination recommendations. They assume continuous cruising at the stated speed. The useful insight is the relationship: choosing a destination before allocating the day can quietly turn a leisure outing into several hours of transportation.
Run the “worth the wake” test
For a destination-focused day, compare time underway with time actually spent there.
A 35-nautical-mile destination at 20 knots requires 1 hour 45 minutes each way in uninterrupted conditions. That is 3.5 hours of cruising. Stay for two hours and you are spending considerably more time reaching the place than experiencing it.
That may be exactly what you want if cruising itself is the attraction. If the goal is a long afternoon at anchor, however, moving the destination 10 nautical miles closer saves an hour of round-trip cruising at 20 knots.
That single calculation often changes the itinerary more intelligently than simply choosing the most appealing distant spot.
Make Fuel Part of the Map
A yacht's fuel gauge and its map answer different questions. Combining them turns vague ideas about range into something useful.
Calculate distance from real fuel burn
Imagine a boat cruising at 24 knots while consuming 12 gallons per hour. It is covering approximately:
24 ÷ 12 = 2 nautical miles per gallon.
Increase speed to 30 knots while consumption rises to 18 gallons per hour:
30 ÷ 18 = about 1.67 nautical miles per gallon.
The faster setting saves 12 minutes over a 30-nautical-mile leg, but in this example it requires roughly three additional gallons each way.
That creates a genuine lifestyle trade-off: is 24 minutes saved across the whole journey worth the additional fuel? On one day, perhaps. On another, those minutes may make almost no difference.
Keep theoretical range off the itinerary
A boat carrying 90 usable gallons and achieving 2 nautical miles per gallon has a theoretical 180-nautical-mile range under those assumed conditions. Planning around all 180 miles would leave no meaningful allowance for changing conditions or consumption.
A widely used recreational planning method divides fuel into thirds: roughly one-third outward, one-third homeward, and one-third retained as reserve.
With 90 gallons, that means treating about 30 gallons as the outward allocation. At 2 nautical miles per gallon, that corresponds to roughly 60 nautical miles under the assumed conditions.
If economy falls to 1.6 nautical miles per gallon, those same 30 gallons correspond to only 48 nautical miles. The tank has not changed; the practical radius has.
Let the Water Edit the Plan
Distance on a chart remains fixed. Travel time does not.
Wave period can matter more than expected
Wave height alone gives an incomplete picture. Wave period measures the time between successive crests. At the same height, shorter-period waves are generally more closely spaced and can create a steeper, busier ride.
Consider a 24-nautical-mile return. At 24 knots, it takes one hour. If conditions make 16 knots a more appropriate cruising speed, it takes 90 minutes.
Nothing has gone “wrong.” The day simply has a different time budget now.
That is why a useful morning check is not merely “What is the wave height?” Look at wave period and direction too, then consider which sections of the planned route are most exposed.
The shortest route is not automatically the quickest-feeling one
A 25-nautical-mile exposed crossing and a 30-nautical-mile partly sheltered route may create very different days. If the shorter route requires sustained lower speeds, the nominal five-mile advantage can disappear.
This is where route choice becomes more interesting than simply drawing a straight line. Compare distance with exposure, likely cruising speed, and available stopping points.

Plan Three Versions of One Day
One fixed destination creates a surprisingly rigid outing. A better recreational route can contain three natural endpoints.
Short, preferred, extended
Imagine a coastline offering suitable stopping points at 12, 24, and 34 nautical miles.
The 12-mile option is the compact day.
The 24-mile point is the intended destination.
The 34-mile option is available when time, fuel, and conditions make continuing worthwhile.
At 20 knots, choosing the 24-mile point instead of the 34-mile point removes one hour from the round-trip cruising time.
That hour has tangible value. It might become an extra hour at anchor rather than an hour spent maintaining course toward a destination selected earlier in the day.
A boat-day radius is not simply the number of nautical miles a yacht can cover. It is the distance that still leaves enough time for the reason you went out in the first place. Give the day a travel budget, translate fuel burn into distance, account for the speed that conditions may realistically allow, and design several worthwhile turnaround points.
