Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has reached an important milestone in his tennis career after winning the 2026 Shanghai Masters. The Spanish player defeated fellow countryman Rafael Jodar in a challenging three-set final, turning around a match that initially appeared to be slipping away.
After finally securing his first ATP Tour trophy in June, Davidovich Fokina has now collected three titles in just a few months, marking an impressive period of progress.

A Comeback That Changed the Final
The Shanghai Masters final on October 18 brought together two Spanish players with different levels of experience on the ATP Tour. Davidovich Fokina, aged 27, faced the 20-year-old Jodar in a match that tested his patience and ability to respond under pressure.
Jodar made the stronger start, taking the opening set 6-1. He continued to put pressure on his opponent during the second set, leaving Davidovich Fokina with little room for error. However, the more experienced player gradually found his rhythm. He recovered from a break behind in the second set and managed to take control during the deciding moments of the tiebreak, winning it 7-5.
The final set brought another shift in momentum. Davidovich Fokina produced more consistent tennis, secured important breaks of serve, and eventually completed a 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory. The match lasted approximately two hours and 27 minutes.
Seven Years of Waiting Finally Pay Off
Davidovich Fokina made his ATP Tour debut in April 2019, but his first years at the highest level did not bring the results he wanted in championship matches. Before his breakthrough in 2026, he had reached five ATP Tour finals without winning a title. One particularly difficult experience came at the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters, where he had an opportunity to claim a major trophy but finished as runner-up.
His fortunes changed in June 2026 when he won the Mallorca tournament. That victory gave him his first ATP Tour singles championship and provided an important boost after years of unsuccessful attempts.
Returning Stronger After a Back Injury
Davidovich Fokina's recent achievements are even more notable considering the interruption he experienced earlier in the season. A back injury forced him to spend approximately two months away from competition. During that period, he had to focus on recovery instead of preparing for tournaments and maintaining his competitive rhythm.
His return took place at the Chengdu Open in September. Remarkably, he won the tournament despite it being his first competition following the extended absence. The result demonstrated how effectively he had returned to the demands of professional tennis. Winning in Shanghai shortly afterward provided further evidence of his improved form and consistency.
A New Career-High Ranking
The Shanghai championship also brought a substantial improvement to Davidovich Fokina's position in the world rankings. Before the tournament, he was ranked 26th. His victory moved him to a career-high position of world number 13 when the rankings were updated.
This improvement reflects more than one successful tournament. His Mallorca, Chengdu, and Shanghai performances have demonstrated his ability to compete consistently and turn strong performances into championship results.
Jodar's Promising Run in Shanghai
Although Rafael Jodar did not win the final, reaching the championship match was an important achievement for the young Spaniard. At 20, he demonstrated considerable ability throughout the tournament and challenged a more experienced opponent in the final. His strong opening set showed that he could compete confidently on a major ATP stage.
Reaching his first Masters 1000 final also represented a significant step in his developing professional career. The experience should provide valuable lessons as he continues competing against established players. The all-Spanish final highlighted the growing presence of Spanish talent on the ATP Tour, with both competitors delivering memorable performances during the tournament.

After years of disappointment in finals, he has transformed his results by winning three championships within a few months. For Davidovich Fokina, the Shanghai trophy is more than another tournament victory. It represents the reward for continued effort, patience, and the support of people who believed in his potential throughout the challenging stages of his career.
