Travel and Fun
Traveling around Morocco is an experience in itself. One journey might take you through busy city streets, mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and wide stretches of desert scenery.
The country has several transport options, making it possible to plan both short city visits and longer trips between popular destinations.

Travel Between Cities by Train
Trains are among the most comfortable ways to travel between several major Moroccan cities. The national railway network, operated by ONCF, connects destinations including Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Meknes, and Fes. The Al Boraq high-speed service connects Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat, and Casablanca. It is a useful choice for travelers who want to cover longer distances more quickly. Conventional trains serve additional routes and offer different seating categories.

Use Buses for Wider Coverage
Buses reach many destinations that are not connected by train. They are especially useful for traveling toward mountain towns, coastal communities, and smaller cities. Companies such as CTM and Supratours operate intercity services on selected routes. Their coaches often provide more structured travel arrangements than local buses, although facilities and journey times vary.
For example, buses are a practical option for reaching places such as Chefchaouen, Essaouira, and Merzouga. Longer journeys can take several hours, so check departure times and arrival locations before purchasing tickets. If you have large luggage, confirm whether an additional baggage charge applies.
Understand Shared Taxis
Shared taxis, commonly called grand taxis, are a familiar form of transport in Morocco. They usually operate between towns and cities, carrying several passengers along established routes. Unlike private taxis, shared vehicles generally depart when enough seats have been filled. This can make them an economical option, although waiting times are less predictable.
Getting Around Cities by Taxi
Smaller taxis, often called petit taxis, are commonly used for short journeys within cities. They are particularly helpful when visiting areas that are difficult to reach on foot or when carrying shopping and luggage. In many cities, these taxis use meters, but practices can differ by location. Ask whether the meter will be used before the journey begins. If a fixed fare is proposed, agree on the amount beforehand.
Rent a Car for More Freedom
A rental car gives travelers greater flexibility when visiting rural areas and places with limited public transport. It can be useful for exploring the Atlas Mountains, coastal roads, or smaller communities at your own pace. Rental agencies are available at major airports and in larger cities. Before booking, compare insurance coverage, fuel policies, mileage limits, and deposit requirements. An international driving permit may also be necessary depending on your license and rental provider.
Explore Remote Areas with Guided Transfers
Some destinations are easier to reach through organized transport. Desert excursions around Merzouga, for example, often include transfers from nearby towns as part of a wider travel package. Guided transfers can also be helpful for visiting remote mountain villages or arranging journeys that combine several stops.
Estimated Transport Costs
Urban petit taxi: approximately €1.50–€6 for a short journey.
Intercity train: around €5–€30, depending on distance and seating class.
Al Boraq high-speed train: approximately €10–€30 for selected journeys.
Intercity bus: roughly €5–€25 for many routes.
Shared grand taxi: around €3–€20 per person, depending on distance.
Rental car: approximately €25–€60 per day, excluding some additional insurance and fuel costs.
Private driver or transfer: around €50–€150 or more for longer journeys, depending on the route and vehicle.
Practical Tips for a Smoother Journey
Keep some small cash available for local transport, particularly in smaller towns. For longer journeys, arrive at stations early and double-check the departure platform or bus terminal. During busy holiday periods, book popular train and bus routes in advance. Keep important belongings secure and avoid leaving valuables unattended in shared vehicles.

Morocco offers several ways to explore its cities, countryside, and coastal destinations. By comparing costs, checking schedules, and allowing enough time for each journey, you can travel around Morocco with greater confidence and enjoy more of what the country has to offer.
