Odd News
Artificial intelligence is becoming an essential part of modern banking, influencing everything from fraud prevention to customer service and software development. As financial institutions increase their investment in advanced technology, competition to become an industry leader is intensifying.
The 2026 Evident AI Index, which evaluates 50 major banks across North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, reveals significant differences in technological progress. JPMorgan Chase retains first place, while UBS stands out as the only European bank among the world's 10 highest-ranked institutions.

Which Banks Lead The Global Rankings?
JPMorgan Chase continues to dominate the international assessment, performing strongly across AI talent, innovation, leadership and responsible technology development.
Capital One ranks second, followed by Royal Bank of Canada in third place and Australia's Commonwealth Bank in fourth.
Switzerland's UBS has climbed to sixth position, strengthening its reputation as Europe's leading institution for AI adoption. Meanwhile, HSBC has slipped from eighth place in 2025 to 11th, leaving UBS as the continent's sole representative in the top 10.
American and Canadian banks account for eight of the leading positions, demonstrating North America's strong presence in financial technology development.
Why Are European Banks Struggling To Keep Up?
The assessment considers several factors, including investment in AI research, recruitment of specialised employees, technological innovation and the responsible management of automated systems.
European banks are actively developing artificial intelligence, although many remain behind their North American competitors in the overall rankings.
British institutions illustrate this difference. Lloyds Banking Group holds 15th place, NatWest ranks 17th and Barclays has improved to 19th after climbing four positions.
These results suggest that progress is continuing across Europe, but the strongest international competitors have established advantages in research capabilities, technical expertise and implementation.
How Is AI Changing Banking Services?
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being incorporated into everyday financial operations. Banks use automated systems to identify suspicious transactions, analyse financial risks, support customer enquiries and improve internal processes.
The institutions included in the assessment have publicly reported more than 1,100 distinct AI applications since 2021.
Development has also accelerated considerably. Over the past year, improvements in banking AI capabilities occurred at nearly three times the average annual pace recorded during the preceding three years.
This rapid expansion reflects growing confidence in the technology's ability to improve efficiency, reduce repetitive tasks and support more informed financial decisions.
What Does This Mean For Bank Employees?
The growing use of AI is reshaping employment across the financial sector. Automated systems can complete certain administrative activities more quickly, allowing employees to concentrate on tasks requiring professional judgement and personal interaction.
At the same time, banks continue recruiting specialists capable of developing and maintaining advanced technologies. Software implementation roles increased by 4.3% across the institutions assessed.
Morgan Stanley has reported redirecting more than one million developer hours saved through its DevGen.AI platform towards other projects.
UBS also estimates that its STAAT Insights system saves financial advisers approximately 1,200 working hours each week.
However, automation may reduce demand for some positions. Standard Chartered plans to eliminate around 7,800 back-office roles by 2030 as it expands its use of technology.
Are AI Investments Delivering Results?
Financial institutions are increasingly measuring the economic value generated by artificial intelligence.
Twelve banks now disclose realised or projected financial returns from AI initiatives, compared with eight in the previous assessment.
Lloyds Banking Group estimates that generative AI produced approximately €59 million in value during 2025, with expected benefits exceeding €117 million in 2026.
Security remains another important consideration. Around 80% of the highest-ranked banks have implemented advanced AI safeguards, compared with approximately 40% of the other institutions assessed.

What Comes Next For The Banking Industry?
Future competition will increasingly depend on whether banks can demonstrate practical benefits from their technological investments.
Beginning in 2027, the Evident AI Index plans to introduce an additional category assessing measurable outcomes from artificial intelligence.
For customers, further innovation could bring faster transactions, improved fraud detection and more personalised financial services.
For financial institutions, maintaining strong security standards while delivering reliable, cost-effective AI solutions will remain a central priority as the industry continues its technological transformation.
