It was a small but powerful lesson in chemistry and curiosity.
Hot and Cold Air Pressure
Our third experiment explored how temperature affects air pressure. Using hot water, cold water, ice, a large bowl, a balloon, and a bottle, we set up a fun challenge.
After filling the bottle with hot water and placing it in a bowl of ice-cold water, we covered it with a balloon. The temperature difference created a noticeable pressure change, causing the balloon to move inwards. We observed the experiment over several minutes, discussing possible reasons and imagining scenarios. This simple setup revealed the hidden forces around us in a very visual and interactive way.
Making a Simple Barometer
Finally, we created a simple barometer using a glass bottle, a balloon, and a straw. By stretching the balloon over the bottle and securing it with a rubber band, then attaching a straw on top, we built a tool to measure air pressure.
As the pressure outside changed, the straw moved, showing whether the weather might be sunny or rainy. Placing the barometer away from windows in a stable room allowed us to predict short-term weather changes. It was amazing to see how a few basic materials could turn into a practical scientific tool.
