Have you ever wondered whether driving a pure electric car is really worth it for our daily city commutes? Many people still see EVs as “experimental” or worry they’re only good for short trips.
After more than two years and nearly 87,600 kilometers behind the wheel of an electric SUV, we can confidently say: city driving is where EVs truly shine.
Let’s explore the details together, from costs and comfort to battery life and real-world convenience.
Smart Setup at Home
Before getting our EV, we made sure we had a fixed parking space and installed a home charging station. This was a game-changer. Having the ability to plug in overnight at home means we start every morning with a fully charged car. It eliminates the need for constant trips to public charging stations and helps us avoid long waits during peak hours. For anyone considering an EV, this setup is almost essential.
Cost Savings That Add Up
Here’s where things get interesting: electricity prices vary depending on when we charge. At night, off-peak household electricity can be as low as $0.05 per kWh, while public chargers can easily cost $0.15–$0.30 per kWh. The difference is huge.
Driving about 2,900 kilometers per month, our home charging bill is only around $36 USD. If we were driving a gasoline car with an average fuel consumption of 7 liters per 100 kilometers, we’d spend roughly $210 USD a month on fuel. That’s nearly six times more! The more we drive, the bigger the savings become. And we don’t need to limit our comfort—air conditioning, heating, and highway speeds don’t stop us from saving money.
Comfort and Driving Experience
Let’s talk about driving itself. Electric cars offer smooth, instant acceleration with no jerking or lag. Even a two-ton SUV responds quickly with just a gentle press of the pedal. Inside, the ride feels calm and quiet—something gasoline cars can’t match.
We once tried a friend’s range-extended car, which switches to a backup system when the battery runs low. The noise was loud, and the acceleration dropped noticeably. With a pure EV, this never happens—the power delivery stays consistent, making every ride smoother and more enjoyable.

Battery Life and Range
Of course, EVs aren’t perfect. When we bought our SUV, the range was 425 kilometers on a full charge. After nearly 90,000 kilometers, it’s down to about 370 kilometers—a drop of roughly 13%. That’s still manageable for daily city driving. With a charging station at home, even if we drive 100 kilometers a day, we’re ready to go again the next morning.
Once we got into the habit of charging every night, “range anxiety” disappeared. For long-distance travelers who often drive across provinces, a longer-range model would make more sense. In our case, the battery is holding up well. Based on current data, even after 200,000 kilometers, the range should still be around 340 kilometers, enough for everyday needs.
If we could go back, we’d probably choose a long-range version. Fewer charging stops and more flexibility always help. Still, our current setup works just fine for city commuting.
Who Should Consider an EV?
Here’s our simple advice: if you have a parking spot where you can install a charger and you drive more than 10,000 kilometers per year, an EV could be the best choice. It saves money, reduces noise, and gives us a new way of driving that feels smoother and more modern.
When people talk about EVs, they often bring up long-distance travel concerns. But for city commutes and daily use, EVs are unbeatable. The key is knowing your lifestyle. Do you drive long trips every week? Or do you mostly stick to the city? Do you have a place for a charging station? Answering these questions will tell you if an EV fits your life.

Ready to Ride?
Lykkers, we’ve shared how EVs have transformed our daily drives—saving money, offering comfort, and making commuting stress-free. If you’re considering switching, think about your mileage, your charging options, and your budget. For most city drivers, an EV is not just practical but a smart financial decision.
So, are we ready to explore the future of driving together? Would you choose an EV for your daily commute, and do you have the setup to make it work? Let’s talk about it—this is a ride we can plan together.
